ASC advises Government on the Climate Change Risk Assessment - 20 November 2009

Lord John Krebs, Chair of the Adaptation Sub-Committee (ASC) has written to Hilary Benn, Secretary of State for the Environment, setting out advice on the evolving methodology for the Climate Change Risk Assessment (CCRA) and Adaptation Economic Assessment (AEA).

The Committee feels that the consultants have some way to go to develop a coherent framework to address the CCRA’s stated objective to ‘assess the risks (including opportunities) to those things which have social, economic and environmental value in the UK from current and future climate change’.

The Committee appreciate that the consultants are just over half way through developing the methodology and therefore did not expect to see a fully formed method. The letter and the accompanying technical paper contain the Committee’s evaluation of the methodology thus far, including recommendations. The Committee will discuss the methodology further with the consultants at the next ASC meeting on 18th December 2009.

Lord John Krebs, Chair of the ASC, recently wrote to Stephen Timms MP, at the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills. In the letter, he urged the Government to reconsider this omission, by introducing new powers for Ofcom under the Digital Economy Bill.
