Good progress in reducing UK emissions will not continue without urgent action to strengthen policies

The Committee on Climate Change (CCC) has published its 2016 Progress Report to Parliament detailing the UK’s progress in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and meeting carbon budgets. The report shows that UK emissions have fallen by an average of 4.5% per year in the last three years and are 38% below 1990 levels. This reduction in emissions has come almost exclusively from one sector: electricity generation, where UK Government policies have driven an increase in renewable generation and a reduction in coal use.

CCC seeks new Chair for Adaptation Sub-Committee

The Committee on Climate Change is seeking a new Chair to lead the work of its Adaptation Sub-Committee (ASC) from 1 February 2017. The new Chair will succeed Lord Krebs who has led the ASC since May 2009.

Compatibility of UK onshore petroleum with meeting carbon budgets – update

The Committee on Climate Change is shortly due to provide advice to the Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change on whether the exploitation of onshore petroleum resources (including shale gas) is compatible with meeting UK carbon budgets. The Committee expects its advice to be published in May.

Domestic implications of the “Paris Agreement” to combat climate change

The UK’s 2008 Climate Change Act was passed, with broad cross-party support, as part of the UK’s contribution to the global effort to address dangerous levels of future climate change. The Committee on Climate Change, set up under the Act to provide independent advice to Government and Parliament, welcomes the agreement that was reached in Paris last week. The agreement helps to clarify the level of global ambition and the processes that will help to achieve that ambition.
