The risks to housing from overheating

This report was commissioned from BRE by the Adaptation Sub-Committee (ASC). It provides supporting research for the ASC’s report: Managing climate risks to well-being and the economy: Adaptation Sub-Committee progress report.

The supporting research uses data from the English House Survey to assess the profile of English dwellings at risk from overheating. The report concludes:

  • around 122,000 dwellings are at risk owing to a variety of factors,
  • older dwellings and city-centre locations were over represented as at risk, and
  • the ability to ventilate and shade dwellings plays a critical part in the development of these risks.
