The Committee on Climate Change (CCC) welcomes the signing of a joint pledge by the UK’s political leaders on tackling climate change.
Matthew Bell, Chief Executive of the CCC said:
“The Climate Change Act was passed with broad cross-party support. It sets up the Committee on Climate Change as independent advisers to Parliament on issues relating to climate change, and the associated carbon budgets and targets. As Parliament’s advisers we have always valued the cross-party consensus on the need for independent advice about this important issue. This pledge, which we welcome, re-enforces that consensus.”
The pledge states:
- to seek a fair, strong, legally binding, global climate deal which limits temperature rises to below 2C
- to work together, across party lines, to agree carbon budgets in accordance with the Climate Change Act
- to accelerate the transition to a competitive, energy efficient low carbon economy and to end the use of unabated coal for power generation
The agreement follows the launch of the SHOW THE LOVE campaign.
