Two Committee members elected as Fellows of the Royal Society

Professor Hayley Fowler and Professor Piers Forster have been elected Fellows of the Royal Society. Professor Fowler has served on the Adaptation Committee since February 2025, and Professor Forster has been a member of the Mitigation Committee since December 2018.

Fellowship of the Royal Society is awarded to researchers who have made a “substantial contribution to the improvement of natural knowledge”.

Professor Hayley Fowler FRS said:

“I am deeply honoured to be elected a Fellow of the Royal Society, particularly as a woman in STEM as we are still significantly under-represented among the membership. Of course, this great honour could not have been achieved without the brilliant young scientists and engineers in my research group, my former postdocs and PhD students, and many collaborators around the world. Together, we will keep on striving to improve forecasts of extreme weather and information for climate adaptation so we can save lives and livelihoods in our rapidly warming climate.”

Professor Piers Forster CBE FRS said:

“I’m very grateful that my work and other climate science expertise of the Committee has been recognised by the Royal Society. With record high May temperatures in the UK, the impacts of climate change can feel increasingly clear. But this understanding has been built over decades thanks to the dedication of many scientists, including colleagues I’ve had the privilege to work alongside. Together the evidence to attribute warming to fossil fuel emissions has been strengthened, allowing us to better advise government on how to limit the risks ahead.”
