Response to the government’s new climate adaptation package

Today the government announced it will be planning for a minimum of 2°C of warming by 2050 and committed to setting stronger, measurable objectives for climate adaptation. The Committee’s response is below.

Baroness Brown, Chair of the Adaptation Committee, said:

“We welcome the government’s announcement of a more ambitious approach to climate adaptation including the adoption of a cross-government planning assumption of a minimum of 2°C of warming by 2050, in line with the Committee’s advice. It is also good to see commitment to setting measurable adaptation objectives in line with this.

“The need for action could not be more urgent. According to the Met Office more than 2,700 people are thought to have died from heat-related causes during the recent May and June heatwaves in England and Wales. The UK is built for a climate that no longer exists. Climate change is here now and impacting lives, infrastructure, the economy, and nature across the UK.

“While today’s announcement is welcome news, our country will need a much more concerted effort – and significantly more funding – if we are to face the scale of the challenges ahead without further risks to our way of life.”
