Action must follow setting of carbon budgets – 22 April 2009

The CCC has welcomed the Government’s acceptance of their carbon budget targets, which, if successful, will see a 34% reduction in emissions of greenhouse gases by 2020. The Government also confirmed that they will not purchase offset credits up to 2020 to meet the budgets, ensuring that real action to tackle climate change happens within the UK.

The Committee on Climate Change (CCC) welcomed the Government’s commitment today for the introduction of three legally binding carbon budgets which will, if met lead to a 34% reduction in emissions of greenhouse gases by 2020. The Government was responding to and accepting the findings of the CCC’s first report, Building a low-carbon economy which set out what the UK’s carbon emissions reduction targets for the period to 2020 should be. It previously accepted the CCC’s recommendation of an 80% emissions cut by 2050.

Scottish Government should act now to tackle climate change – 27 January 2009

David Kennedy, Chief Executive of the CCC appeared before the Scottish Parliament’s Transport, Infrastructure and Climate Change Committee on 27 January 2009 to discuss Scotland’s Climate Change Bill and how best emissions cuts can be made by the National Authority. He emphasised that swift action must be taken immediately and over the next five, 10 and 15 years in particular to halt the effects of climate change.

CCC to report on new aviation emissions cap – 15 January 2009

The Committee on Climate Change (CCC) has been asked by the Government to conduct a review into how UK aviation emissions can be limited to below 2005 levels in 2050. The aviation target will play a useful role in buttressing the UK’s overall commitment to an 80% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions (below 1990 levels) in 2050.
