Lord Krebs, Chair of the Adaptation Sub-Committee (ASC), has written to Huw Irranca-Davies MP, Chair of the House of Commons Environmental Audit Committee, to provide written evidence to the EAC’s inquiry into soil health.
- welcomes the inquiry
- recalls that the health of the UK’s soils is of critical importance for the productive capacity of agricultural land
- states that a combination of population and economic growth are expected to increase global demand for food in the future. At the same time, climate change could reduce the capacity of the land globally to keep pace with growing demand
- says that it is, therefore, essential that the UK is doing all that it can to protect the long-term productive capacity of our agricultural soils
The letter is accompanied by a written submission to the inquiry on soil health from the Adaptation Sub-Committee.
