The Agriculture Advisory Group report

1. Outline

The Agriculture Advisory Group was convened by the Climate Change Committee (CCC) in 2024, to help the CCC understand:

  • The role of agriculture and farmers in contributing to the delivery of a Net Zero and climate resilient UK.
  • What is required from agricultural and other relevant land use policies in enabling and/or posing risks to reducing agricultural emissions and increasing climate resilience.
  • The priorities for UK policy actions in this area which empower farmers and land managers to deliver the pathways in a fair way.

This report reflects the views of the Agriculture Advisory Group and does not represent the views of the CCC, nor has it been endorsed by the CCC.

2. Key messages

In its recommendations to policymakers, the Agriculture Advisory Group saw the need for a holistic, integrated approach, one that:

  • Invests in data collection, harmonisation, and utilisation for strategic baselining.
  • Supports practical business action through a package of incentives, tools, knowledge exchange, and training.
  • Makes a step change in assessing, managing, and responding to weather and climate shocks, risks, and opportunities.
  • Is much more positive about the contribution that resilient farming businesses, agricultural land, and farmers can make to meeting the climate challenge.
